n8n developer job description: what the role does and a template you can copy
Updated October 17, 2026 · By the Hyparz talent team
An n8n developer designs, builds and operates automated workflows on the n8n platform: they connect business systems through triggers, APIs and webhooks, add logic with expressions and the Code node, wire in AI models through the AI Agent node, and keep everything idempotent, monitored and secure in production. A good job description states which systems the workflows touch, whether n8n is self-hosted or on n8n Cloud, the volume and sensitivity of the data, and who owns the instance.
Below: the role summary, responsibilities, skills, a paste-ready template, seniority levels, sourced salary data and the mistakes that make strong candidates skip your ad.
Key takeaways
- Define the role by outcomes (systems integrated, hours saved, incidents avoided), not by a list of nodes.
- Say whether n8n is self-hosted or Cloud; it changes the skills you need from workflow building to running infrastructure.
- Require production habits: idempotency, error workflows, credential hygiene and versioning, in the requirements, not the nice-to-haves.
- Senior and lead n8n developers own the instance, environments, queue mode and data-retention policy, not just workflows.
- Hyparz matches pre-vetted n8n developers typically within days; about 5% of AI-role applicants pass vetting.
What does an n8n developer do?
An n8n developer is a workflow-automation engineer who uses n8n to move data and decisions between systems without writing a full application. They build workflows from webhook, schedule and polling triggers, HTTP Request and app nodes, expressions, the Code node (JavaScript or native Python) and sub-workflows. In 2026 the role increasingly includes AI: the AI Agent node, LangChain-based chain and tool nodes, memory, vector stores and MCP connections.
The production half of the job separates a developer from a template user: deduplication and retries, error workflows and alerting, credentials in a vault rather than a node, Git-backed versioning, and execution-data retention that keeps customer data out of logs. See AI automation use cases for what these workflows typically do.
What are the responsibilities?
- Turn requirements from operations, sales or support into workflow designs with clear inputs, outputs and failure behaviour.
- Build and maintain n8n workflows using triggers, app nodes, the HTTP Request node, expressions, the Code node and sub-workflows.
- Integrate SaaS tools, internal APIs and databases, handling authentication, rate limits and pagination.
- Make workflows idempotent: deduplication keys, upserts and safe retries for webhook replays.
- Implement error handling: Retry On Fail, On Error routing, error workflows and alerts to a channel someone owns.
- Build AI automations with the AI Agent node, tools, memory and vector stores, with evaluation sets and cost controls.
- Manage credentials and secrets in n8n's credential store or an external vault; never in code or expressions.
- Version workflows in Git and promote them through development, staging and production environments.
- Monitor executions, failure rates and run times, and reduce execution-data retention for workflows that touch personal data.
- Document each workflow (owner, trigger, systems, failure mode) and hand over cleanly.
Which skills are required?
- Two or more years building production n8n workflows, or equivalent on Zapier or Make plus an n8n portfolio.
- Solid JavaScript for expressions and the Code node; Python is a plus now that the Code node supports native Python.
- REST and webhook fundamentals: HTTP methods, authentication (API keys, OAuth2, JWT), status codes, rate limits, pagination.
- JSON data modelling and n8n's item model, including paired items and per-item versus all-items execution.
- Error handling and idempotency patterns for at-least-once delivery.
- Credential and secrets hygiene, least-privilege API scopes, and awareness of what execution logs retain.
- Git basics: exporting workflow JSON, reviewing diffs, environment variables and n8n variables.
- Clear documentation and the judgement to say when a problem belongs in code, not a workflow.
Which skills are nice to have?
- Self-hosting n8n: Docker, Postgres, reverse proxy and TLS, backups, upgrades, and queue mode with Redis and workers.
- LLM and agent experience: prompt design, tool permissions, evaluation sets, MCP servers and clients.
- Zapier or Make migration experience; many teams move workflows across. See Zapier developers and Make experts.
- Observability: log streaming, Insights dashboards, alerting.
- Data-protection basics for automations that process customer data: data maps, retention, pseudonymisation.

About the role
We are hiring an n8n developer to own automation across [sales, support and finance]. You will build and operate workflows on [self-hosted n8n in our AWS account / n8n Cloud] that connect [HubSpot, Stripe, Zendesk, Postgres and Slack], including AI-assisted workflows using the AI Agent node. The workflows handle [approximate volume] executions a month and touch customer data, so production habits matter as much as build speed. You report to [the head of operations].
Responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain n8n workflows with clear failure behaviour, error workflows and alerts.
- Integrate our systems through APIs and webhooks with idempotent, rate-limit-aware patterns.
- Build and evaluate AI automations with the AI Agent node and tool nodes.
- Keep credentials in the credential store or vault, workflows in Git, and execution data minimised.
- Document workflows and train business users to trigger and monitor them.
Requirements
- [2+] years with n8n in production, or equivalent on Zapier or Make with an n8n portfolio.
- JavaScript for expressions and the Code node; comfortable with JSON, REST and webhooks.
- Proven error handling, deduplication and secrets hygiene; you can describe an incident you prevented.
- Experience with [Postgres] and at least one of [HubSpot, Salesforce, Zendesk].
Nice to have
- Self-hosting n8n with queue mode, backups and upgrades.
- LLM or agent experience, including evaluation and cost controls.
- Zapier or Make migration experience.
How we work
[Remote, with four hours of overlap with Central European Time.] [Contract or full-time], [40 hours a week], [budget or range if you publish one]. Our process: a 20-minute screen, a 60-minute observed build exercise, a 45-minute technical conversation, and a decision within a week.
What changes by seniority?
- Junior: builds and fixes workflows from a spec, uses built-in nodes and simple expressions, needs review on error handling and credentials.
- Mid-level: owns workflows end to end, writes Code nodes, designs idempotent integrations, sets up error workflows and documents without being asked.
- Senior: owns the instance: self-hosting or Cloud administration, Git-based environments, queue mode, execution-data retention, AI workflow evaluation, and the judgement to move a problem into code.
- Lead: sets automation standards across teams, reviews other builders' workflows, and owns licensing, capacity and cost.
What do n8n developers earn?
There is no reliable n8n-specific salary index yet, so look at the broader automation-engineer title and adjust for AI skills and location. As of 2 April 2026, Payscale lists an average base salary of USD 86,556 for automation engineers in the United States, with a 10th-to-90th percentile range of USD 66,000 to 121,000 across 1,225 profiles. Talent.com (2026) reports an average of USD 130,175, from USD 101,875 at entry level to USD 177,880 for experienced engineers. Built In (2026) puts the average base at USD 105,899. Postings that combine n8n with LLM or agent work sit at the upper end.
Contract rates vary with the same drivers: seniority, whether the person will run infrastructure or only build workflows, AI depth, overlap hours and engagement length. Hyparz publishes indicative hourly bands for AI engineers that track the rates Arc.dev publishes; the quote depends on specialism, seniority and engagement length. Which mistakes make strong candidates skip your posting?
- Listing 30 tools and no outcomes. Name the three systems that matter and the result you want.
- Not saying self-hosted or Cloud. The skill sets differ and seniors will not apply blind.
- Putting error handling, idempotency and secrets in the nice-to-haves. They are the job.
- Asking for "5+ years of n8n" instead of production outcomes.
- Describing an AI agent you want built with no data, no success metric and no human review step.
